Company History
Stormy Leather®: 20 Years On!!!
Stormy Leather was founded in 1983.
The majority of the first two years in business were spent in an "intimate" (i.e. small!) basement space on Noe Street in the Castro. From the beginning, Stormy wanted to be inclusive of all sexualities. That philosophy has continued throughout the past twenty-four years and is today part of what makes the Stormy Leather retail store in San Francisco both unique and successful.
By 1986 Stormy had outgrown the basement space and moved to the American Industrial Center on Third Street. Four years later they had outgrown that space. In looking for a new workshop, Stormy came across 1158 Howard Street and thought the space suitable for both a workshop and retail store. The Stormy Leather Retail Store opened its doors on May 5th 1990. The workshop and store shared the same building for the next four years, separated by chain-link fences. Store customers would peek over the fences to watch the "leather elves".
In 1994 Stormy Leather was "forced" to expand both the workshop and the store. It was through this expansion that the store really came into its own, becoming a beautiful 2000 sq. ft. showroom with Italian lighting, hardwood floors and spacious dressing rooms. Skin Two recently quoted Stormy Leather as being, "possibly the best fetish store [they've] ever seen". Twenty years later, Stormy Leather continues year after year to be voted "Best Women's Leather Store" by the Society for Human Sexuality..
In 1999, Stormy Leather moved the wholesale production and online departments to a new warehouse space in San Francisco's Bayview District.
Stormy Leather was voted "Best Leather Shop" in the SF Bay Guardian 27th Annual Readers' Poll, just as the company turned 18 years old at the beginning of August 2001! In 2007, Stockroom.com purchased Stormy Leather. We have expanded the retail space from 2500 sq. ft. to 6000 sq. ft. to better serve our customers.
Stormy Leather takes pride in it's excellent customer service, and in a recent survey, both staff knowledge and helpfulness were rated "Excellent". Our products are specialized and therefore need to be presented (particularly for the novice), in an informative but relaxed manner. It is not unusual for a staff member to spend a great deal of time with a customer helping them to make the right choices. We believe that our customers deserve the best service possible. In addition, we place a high emphasis on educating our customers, whether it be in SM toys or bondage equipment or care of fetish clothing.
